DESCRIPTION:
EPW - A. Golay-Leresche, Genève, perpetual calendar with retrograde date, 47mm, 18K gold OF original case, signed gold cuvette with presentation engraving "Frank B. Fay, Chelsea, U.S.A., Mass.," small button on band at 2 for calendar advance, white enamel DS dial with register for month indication in French, aperture for date indication in French, and upper sector for retrograde date, SW-button-set, fully capped lever escapement, wolf's tooth winding, gilt mvt, s#5918 within case. Gross weight of assembled watch 57.0 dwt (88.6 g). Franklin Brigham Fay was the mayor of Chelsea during the Civil War years of 1861 through 1863, and Fay took an active role in this time assisting Union troops, eventually publishing an account of this experience entitled "War Papers of Frank B. Fay, with Reminiscences of Service in the Camps and Hospitals of the Army of the Potomac, 1861-1865." The image of an article with additional biographical infomation from the March 21st, 1904 issue of the Boston Globe following Fay's passing is included with our photos of this lot.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, good perpetual calendar function, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, plates with some scattered scratches and fine scratches; dial with many scattered hls and fractures, some small surface flakes among fractures above signature, fracture along edge at 9 looks to have been stabilized with glue; case shows ample wear, profuse micro-fine scratches, very slight dent to lower rear, only a faint trace of engine turning remaining visible to small portion of lower central rear; tight bow thinned at top, gilt crown shows medium wear with much wear to underlying white metal; good glass crystal.
